Czechoslovak Occultism and its Representatives during the First Republic

The bachelor's thesis Czechoslovakia Occultism and its Important Representatives during the First Republic copes the theme of modern occultism in context of western esoteric traditions and formation the modern society. It focuses on the methodological issues of new religion movements and secularization, and on the comprehensive typology of occultism. By processing the thesis a special emphasis was given on deeper culture and historical roots, which were the basics of the Czech modern occultism. Firstly there is the evolution and dynamics of individual occult movements in Czech country and subsequently its most important representatives are mentioned. The main concentration is on the directions, which achieved eminent organized forms during the First Republic such as the spiritism, the hermeticism or the mysticism. However other significant directions are also mentioned in the thesis for example the theosophy. Antonio Fogazzaro's Little World of the Past

Antonio Fogazzaro's best-known novel The Little World of the Past, which was published in 1895 and deals with the love story which takes place in the vicinity of lake Lugano in northern Italy on the background of Italian unification called Risorgimento and evolves themes of belief and of conflict of different views of life. The novel is put into the European cultural and intellectual context, in which The Decadent movement was the main stream of this period. It is concentrated on the Italian history and literary movements as well. Furthermore there is the introduction of the author - Antonio Fogazzaro, which is focused mainly on his life and works. The main part of this thesis is dedicated to the novel itself and to its analysis like plot, the characters of the protagonists and the main themes, such as the occultism, the Catholicism, the conflict between belief and reason, and the conflict between progress and tradition. In conclusion there is the summary of the observations of the analysis and estimation of the contribution of the novel to Italian society.

Magic in the period of Judaism of the second temple and early Christianity

Magic in the period of Judaism of the second temple and early Christianity Abstract The presented work focuses on the history of esotericism in the period of the Second Temple of Judaism and early Christianity, and shows the cultural intersections of magical and religious communities as well as individuals who have studied the art of magic. It points out the main sources of their magical and religious teachings and the origin of magic and magical thinking. It traces the main roots of both religion and magic and describes the development of magical practices in that specifical period of the time. Furthermore, after a small analysis, a comparison is made of the five basic cultures living in the territory of the "fertile crescent" just at the time of the Second Temple and their magic. There is also a detailed discussion on the field of demonology and some personalities of the time who were obviously dealing with magic. The first part describes all of the available magical disciplines and techniques that a mortal can come into contact with during the Second Temple in the region known as "Fertile Crescent". All the disciplines I mention in my work were already known at the time of the Second Temple, but some of them were not that developed, so they were expanded or were elaborated on in a later period. Nazism versus occultism in the Protectorate Bohemia and Moravia: Lives of Jiří Arvéd Smíchovský and Jan Kefer

This thesis entitled Nazism versus Occultism in the Protectorate of Bohemia and Moravia: The Fate of Jiří Arvéd Smíchovský and Jan Kefer, deals primarily with the life of two Czech hermeticians, Jan Kefer and Jiří Arvéd Smíchovský, on the background of their relation to occultism and Nazism. In addition to describe the lives of both persons, with a closer focus on their fates during the Protectorate of Bohemia and Moravia, the master thesis also brings a chapter on the almost unknown Nazi action against the secret sciences and occultists which took place in the territory of the Protectorate in 1941. At the beginning of the text, reader gets familiarized with some basic concepts from occult science and the relationship between Nazism and occultism in general. Then follows the aforementioned chapter on the occultists' persecution in the protectorate. The main pillars of the thesis are the biographies of J. A. Smíchovský and J. Kefer which focus more closely on the Protectorate period. In my thesis I work with many sources, especially from historical sources stored in state and private archives or interviews with a witness. Emanuel Hauner's conversion and reconversion at the fin de siècle

The goal of the final thesis Emanuel Hauner's conversion and reconversion at the fin de siècle is to introduce and to interpret Emanuel Hauner's major poetic works, which have been so far neglected by the Czech literary history. My goal was to analyze the reasons of refusal of his works by both readers and critics. To make this analysis precise, it was necessary to take a close look at two phenomena appearing in Hauner's work: stylization and epigonism. The second major goal of this thesis was to answer the question of how Hauner's relation to occultism and Catholicism influenced his works. I was looking for other European authors that, similarly to Hauner, converted to Catholicism and in some parts of their lives had affinity for occultism. I have thus put Hauner's work both in the context of work of authors in whose work the conversion to Catholicism played a major role, and in the context of the artistic criteria of his time.
